Piano Lessons with Kathy Novalis at Coffey Music

Get to know Kathy Novalis:

What is your background and experience as a piano teacher?

I graduated from the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music in 1971 with a B.A. in music, double majoring in piano and voice performance. I’ve been playing since I was 7, and teaching for about 30 years in many settings—most recently, out of my home, at Carroll Community College (group piano classes), and now at Coffey Music. I’ve taught beginners of all ages, from boys and girls in elementary school to retired adults. I’ve taught intermediate and early advanced level pianists, too. I have extensive experience as an accompanist/performer, playing for choirs, recitals, banquets, Solo and Ensemble Festival, auditions, recording sessions, religious services, weddings, funerals, homeschool graduations, hospice, nursing homes, plays, ballet classes, coffee houses, and special occasions, such as high school, camp, and college productions of Broadway musicals. Besides teaching piano, I’ve led and arranged music for a wide variety of school choruses, church choirs, and other choral groups in the United States, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, and Zimbabwe.

What motivates you to teach music?

I began teaching music simply because people asked me to teach them and their children, and found to my surprise that I enjoyed it enormously. I delight in encouraging piano students of all ages, in helping them discover their musical gifts at their own pace, regardless of their past experience. It is never too late to begin, or to start over!

I have seen my students give home recitals for the pleasure and entertainment of family and friends, perform special music for worship at church, and accompany school choirs and shows. Or sometimes they just play the piano alone for themselves, finding it peaceful, therapeutic, satisfying, fulfilling—and just plain fun! In all this, I have loved seeing how music has the power to move hearts, birth gladness, banish loneliness, and bring people together.
