Banjo Lessons with Christopher James at Coffey Music

Get to know Christopher James:

“I’ve been singing and playing music since I was 5 years old, and my parents bought me my first guitar at the Union Mills Homestead corn roast. I grew up listening to blues, jazz, folk, country, classical and rock & roll, as well as learning from my guitar playing mom, uncle and brother; establishing a broad and open love of music. I began teaching 25 years ago and have taught at Coffey Music since 1994. I’ve released five albums, twice won the MD State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Award (once for performance, once for composition), was a finalist in the International Blues Competition in Memphis, TN, and tours and records with international recording artist Guy Davis. Guy’s latest album, Kokomo Kidd, features myself on mandolin and electric guitar and even won Best Acoustic Blues album of the year from Blues Blast magazine, as well as being nominated for a W.C. Handy Award by the Blues Foundation.

One of my favorite things about being a musician is getting to travel and meet and play with people from around the world sharing in the common language of music.

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is sharing my love of music and learning, and opening up peoples’ minds to possibilities with their instruments and themselves that they thought were beyond them or never imagined!”
